Gregg Keplinger / Reuben Radding / Daniel Carter - Language
by Jon Davis, Expose

This set starts out with a mangled bowed sound from Reuben Radding's bass, more sound effects than notes, joined after a few moments by Daniel Carter's alto sax and Gregg Keplinger's drums. The three wander aimlessly for a bit, then the fog clears and a quick swinging tempo emerges, with Radding providing a busy bottom end, Keplinger simultaneously keeping the beat on the ride cymbal and adding unexpected accents on snare and toms, and Carter... read more

Josh Nelson - The Sky Remains
by Bruce Crowther, Jazz Mostly

On this musical portrait of Los Angeles, pianist Josh Nelson takes inspiration from places and people and events that have added to the city's rich history. Instrumentalists joining Josh on this album are trumpeter Chris Lawrence, alto saxophonist Josh Johnson, clarinetist Brian Walsh, organist Larry Goldings, guitarist Anthony Wilson, bassist Alex Boneham, drummer Dan Schnelle, and percussionist Aaron Serfaty. Also heard are vocalists Kathleen... read more

John Stowell / Michael Zilber - Basement Blues
by Mike Joyce, JazzTimes

Following this West Coast ensemble's two widely acclaimed recordings, Shot Through With Beauty and Live Beauty, Basement Blues may seem like a departure, in tone and tack. But as "Stowell in Heart" and other highlights here warmly illustrate, Basement Blues is similarly riddled with charms, to say nothing of its soulful allure and conversational postbop gambits.

A bit of good cheer, too, enlivens this... read more

Jeff Johnson - Tall Stranger
by Larry Cosentino, Signal To Noise

It's rare to experience music that seems to strive toward complete immobility. Jeff Johnson's "Tall Stranger" has a staggering, strung-out pace that may drive some people crazy, but will surely delight others who resist our world's accelerating rate of input. All three legs of this trio (Johnson on bass, plus reedman Has Teuber and drummer Billy Mintz) have tireless storytelling chops. Johnson drawls out his solos like a grizzled... read more

Don Lanphere - Where Do You Start?
by Jim Bates, Seattle Times Obituary

DON LANPHERE
June 26, 1928 - October 9, 2003

Don Lanphere, the legendary Wenatchee-born bebop jazz saxophone player who overcame dependence on drugs and alcohol to become one of the deans of Seattle jazz musicians, died yesterday at Group Health Eastside Hospital in Redmond. He was 75.

Mr. Lanphere, of Kirkland, was a regular at jazz events in the region, playing a gig at Tula's, in numerous festivals and as featured tenor... read more

Storms/Nocturnes - VIA
by Robert Shore, Jazzwise Magazine

It's been eight long years since this transatlantic chamber trio last released an album, and how the players have developed and grown in the interim. It's perhaps a reflection of that greater degree of maturity that this is a much more egalitarian outing, with the players contributing equally to the writing (in fact, Keezer gets four tunes to Locke and Garland's three apiece). Recorded in the Lake District, this is a deeply evocative work which... read more

Dan Dean - 251
by Ken Dryden, All Music Guide

Electric bassists aren't all that common leading jazz record dates, but Dan Dean found a very unusual approach, which is playing duets with four separate keyboardists. Kenny Werner is a first-call sideman, leader, and soloist. His meeting with Dean in a superb take of the old warhorse "'S Wonderful" is full of twists, turns, and outright surprises, and while their interpretation of "Body and Soul" is considerably more subdued, it nonetheless... read more

Scenes - Silent Photographer
by Editor, Amazon

The Pacific Northwest is full of jazz musicians who deserve more notice outside the region. The Seattle/Portland trio Scenes is one example. Guitarist John Stowell, bassist Jeff Johnson and Origin Records honcho/drummer John Bishop first came together, along with tenor saxophonist Rick Mandyck, on the 2001 album Scenes. Since that time, Bishop, Stowell and Johnson have produced four more releases under the nomenclature Scenes. The trio's 2010... read more
