Known primarily as Sonny Rollins' sideman, guitarist Bobby Broom has put out a few discs on his own, and this latest one might be his best one yet. Spaciously accompanied by Dennis Carrol (bass) and Kobie Watkins (drums), Broom grooves through a set of cleverly selected tunes, and makes them swing and sway. Clever arrangements of The Beatles' "Can't Buy Me Love" and "The Little Rascals Theme" make these pieces seem like logical jazz standards.... read more
Saxophonist Wojciechowski (performing musician/composer/high school teacher) leads the life of the title of one of his compositions, "Divided Man" and comments that he feels his dual role is reflected in the tone and tempo shifts of several of his compositions and performances. His quartet is completed by Ryan Cohen (keys), Dennis Carroll (bass) and Dana Hall (drums) and everyone interacts with and supports the leader wonderfully, whether... read more
Don't let the title fool you. This is mellow-soul, Hammond B3-guitar-drums jazz of the highest order. (I suspect the title is a reference to a famous Louis Armstrong quote: "All music is folk music. I ain't never heard no horse sing a song.") Organist Chris Foreman, guitarist Bobby Broom and drummer Greg Rockingham establish a groove that won't quit. Mostly, the music swings. I haven't heard such feeling-good organ-guitar jazz since the... read more
Pianist Nelson's ode to the Red Planet, inspired by science, stories and space travel. A deft mix of solo, small & large ensemble, instrumental and vocal pieces. For an album with a (relatively) small sound, it's awfully damn... read more
There's an exhilarating moment on pianist and composer Bill Anschell's superb new album Rumbler that is emblematic of the album's strengths, and it's right at the top of the first track. The disc kicks off with piano and saxophone outlining Thelonious Monk's iconic "Misterioso." Sure, it's a great composition, but with all the masterful versions already recorded, can there really be anything new here?
Suddenly, skepticism is knocked aside as... read more
Twopool is an experimental quartet led by cellist/bassist Jonas Tauber with fellow Swiss musicians Andreas Tschopp on trombone, alto saxophonist Andrea Oswald and drummer Christian Wolfarth. Their disc Traffic Bins, part of Origin Records' Zrich Series, consists of thirteen tracks of completely improvised musical conversations.
Amid the clang and clatter emerge sensible developments of theme and rhythm, basking momentarily in thick tension... read more
The Northwest trio/quartet Scenes dates back twelve years or so prior to their 2001 album debut. Over the years, the band became a trio featuring guitarist John Stowell, bassist Jeff Johnson, and drummer John Bishop due to injuries that forced tenor saxophonist Rick Mandyck into a fourteen-year hiatus from playing the saxophone.
Mandyck returned to the band's recordings and live performances in 2019, culminating in the Origin Records release... read more
