Pianist Oscar Hernández (New York, United States 22-03-1954) presents Love The Moment , the second album he records along with his quintet Alma Libre. The Bronx-born and director of La Spanish Harlem Orchestra, published in 2017 The Art Of Latin Jazz , his first album with this format.
Hernandez, who has recorded in an infinite number of projects since the 1970s (La Conquistadora, Joey Pastrana, Celia Cruz, Pete "El Conde" Rodriguez, The... read more
5-STARS The drummer Robby Ameen's 3rd recording Diluvio explodes with atomic energy right off the blocks with the celebrated rhythmist striking a particularly pose with positively insolent virtuosity from the opening bars of "Fast Eye". The song not only celebrates the drummer's intuitive voice as a composer, but also speaks to a fairly telling characteristic of his musical personality - one that uses a kind of sports metaphor - to... read more
It's hard to put the finger on what makes for a successful piano trio set. Some of jazz's bona fide great keyboard players turn in less than inspired efforts, sets that just don't hold the listener's interest for the duration of an hour of music. It's probably the worst criticism that can be made of a recording - that it just doesn't hold interest. And the piano trio format can be particularly unforgiving.
And having said that, the other... read more
The title of this release aptly describes the various grooves cultivated by veteran Chicago drummer Jack Mouse. At times caught up in delightful swing, as on "The Breezeling," and at other times deliberately funky, as on "Hip Check," Mouse propels his bandmates forward with a fresh combination of energy and finesse. Guitarist John McLean, who at times conjures up a John Scofield vibe, trumpeter Art Davis and saxophonist Scott Robinson... read more
The action shifts here to Edmonton, Alberta, in Canada, to a venue called, appropriately The Yardbird Suite. It is a quieter venue and [also appropriately] Mr Galper begins the proceedings with a venerable interpretation of John Carisi's "Israel". It is clear from the outset that the venue is not as acoustically perfect as the musicians would have liked it to be and the music seems to echo as if in a small cavern. Fortunately, this does little... read more
Playing piano, keys and synthesizers, Jose Luiz Martins mixes his own compositions with covers as he creates rich textures with a post-bop team of Alex Hamburger/fl-voc, Romeir Mendez/b, Dana Hawkins/dr and guests John Lee/g, Nakama/voc, Tyrone Allen/eb and Florian Haas/dr. The mix of Martins keys and Hamburger's beefy flute work wonders as on the upbeat and Latin'd "Cravo E Canela" while Lee joins in with the two for some tricky lines on the... read more
4 1/2 STARS Remember the good old days when bandleaders would give a downbeat and their bands would start swinging and keep on doing so until their audiences literally begged for more? Welcome to the past—present tense—courtesy of pianist Geoff Stradling's superb Los Angeles-based StradBand, which swings heartily and with seldom a pause on its radiant and power-laden introductory album, Nimble Digits.
Yes, the album does... read more
4 1/2 - STARS "Polytonal," according to Webster's, denotes "the simultaneous use of two or more musical keys." Denver-based trumpeter and educator Brad Goode makes full use of that technique on The Snake Charmer, the debut recording by Goode's well-named Polytonal Big Band. When all has been written and played, two things are clear: first, Goode is a world-class big-band composer-arranger and master of his horn; and second, polytonality... read more
