Big Neighborhood - Neighbors
by Peter Monaghan, Earshot

Measuring instrumental jazz isn't, on reflection, that different a task from considering vocal jazz. Again, the crux is being convinced by it all, and that's as subjective as it is arguable and, ideally, defensible.

I like Big Neighborhood's Neighbors (Origin). It is purposeful, unusual, innovative jazz of a variety that isn't going to scare anybody - for reasons good and bad, that seems, certainly, often to be a measure of jazz... read more

Dawn Clement - Break
by Adam Greenberg, All Music Guide

She's a vocalist at times, but it's her ability on the piano that sets Dawn Clement apart from the crowd. The songs chosen for this, her sophomore album as a bandleader, are largely from the realm of the jazz torch song, but with a handful of original compositions and a few surprises thrown in. Clement has a tiny, gentle singing voice ? definitely youthful but with something of the breathy, kittenish quality of Portishead's Beth Gibbons as well.... read more

Bobby Broom - Upper West Side Story
by Jon Ross, Downbeat Magazine

**** 4-Stars

Starting with the very first notes of "D's Blues"--a languid but powerful riff atop busy drums and droning bass--Bobby Broom bleeds simple, unadulterated blues from his guitar. He keeps it up, with a quiet intensity, for the rest of Upper West Side Story.

His use of clean, pure guitar sound gives his chords a bit of jangle, which provides an added depth to his comping and his chordal solos. He's not an... read more

Sarah Partridge - Bright Lights and Promises: Redefining Janis Ian
by Robert Rusch, Cadence

SARAH PARTRIDGE's BRIGHT LIGHTS & PROMISES [Origin Records 82732] is subtitled Redefining Janis Ian. Ian made her mark early in her career as a teenager in the mid 1960s. By the mid-1970s she was on the map with her anthem "At Seventeen", a cutting commentary on the standards of beauty and adolescent cruelty (and this was pre-social media!). Recorded 8/18&19/16, the 13 Ian tunes [65:12] here are handled well by Partridge and cohorts [Allen... read more

Todd Bishop - Little Played Little Bird
by George Fendel, Jazz Society of Oregon

Okay, along with a lot of you, I haven't explored the music of Ornette Coleman to the extent that I probably should have. I've "always" admired "Lonely Woman," and as Bishop explains, on a disc of Coleman tunes that nobody ever does, "Lonely Woman" is the exception because, he writes, "I've been playing it for 20 years and it deserves to be here." Bishop's quintet includes two reedmen, Richard Cole and Tim Willcox, who join forces... read more

John Moulder - Decade: Memoirs
by Raul da Gama, JazzDaGama

There is a dimension to John Moulder that is always deeply contemplative. It is often overshadowed by raucous nature of his guitar-playing, while exploring an idea through its expression of particularly vivid chordal - or even - single-note lines and phrases. However if one penetrates the membrane of his melodies a profound nature emerges in his compositions. Often this is even deeply spiritual, as in his music on Trinity (Origin, 2006) and... read more

Bobby Broom - My Shining Hour
by George W. Harris, Jazz Weekly

Few guitarists these days possess an identifiable tone; Bobby Broom's one of the guys who does. He's been a perfect foil for tenor guys like Stanley Turrentine and Sonny Rollins, as his #2 pencil thin tone mixed with a duster of a strum is like a signature from a fountain pen.

Most of the standards here are taken at a joyful and midtempo lilt, making "My Ideal" more wistful than longing and "My Shining Hour" brimming with hope.... read more

Scenes - Rinnova
by Stuart Kremsky, Cadence

Considerably absorbing is the second album by a trio of guitarist Stowell, bassist Johnson, and drummer Bishop. They've been gigging as a unit for over nine years, and their rapport has reached an enviable tightness. Dynamically astute and rhythmically sensitive, this is very satisfying music, the kind of interactive Jazz that doesn't hit you over the head as much as insinuate itself into your consciousness.

The majority of the tunes are by... read more
