Matt Jorgensen + 451 - Another Morning
by Christopher DeLaurenti, The Stranger

With Another Morning (Origin), Matt Jorgensen+451 continue their pathbreaking combination of jazz, rock, and funk, all without succumbing to the excesses of yore: aimless solos, straitjacketed arrangements, and second-rate riffs. My favorite track, "Lock Down," begins with Ryan Burns laying down some serene electric piano chords but a sequence of ascending harmonies takes over, giving the tune a yearning, Pet Sounds?era Brian Wilson feel. Fine... read more

Randy Halberstadt - Flash Point
by Tim Taylor, Audiophile Audition

Pianist Randy Halberstadt is a major player in the Pacific Northwest Jazz Scene. Flash Point is another fine presentation of post-bop jazz coming out of Seattle. Randy recorded this album with his working trio of Jeff Johnson-bass and Mark Ivester ? drums adding Mark Taylor ? alto sax and Thomas Marriott - trumpet to make it a quintet. Randy composed six of the nine songs recorded.

Flash Point begins with "Rigenia" and... read more

Benjamin Boone with the Ghana Jazz Collective - Joy
by WOLFGANG GRATZER, Jazz Podium (Germany)

Fulbright scholarships are an attractive option, as they promote the international exchange of researchers from and in the USA. The target group also includes musicians. The one from Statesville/North Carolina-born saxophonist Benjamin Boone (*1963) knows how to seize this opportunity. Stays in different countries were and are the result. His traces can be found on several continents, even the German university cities of Tübingen and Erlangen... read more

Chris Walden & the LMR Jazz Orchestra feat. Tierney Sutton & Kurt Elling - Missa Iubileum Aureum: Golden Jubilee Jazz Mass
by George W Harris, Jazz Weekly

Not since Duke Ellington's famed Sacred Concerts has jazz so successfully melded Christian faith with modern music, and not since Bach has it been done with such reverent orthodoxy.

Leader and conductor Chris Waldon comes up with the brilliantly inspired (in the true sense of the word) concept of delivering a true jazz mass for the faithful, bringing in liturgical pieces such as "Kyrie", "Gloria" and even the Latin translation of the... read more

Chris Walden Big Band & The St. John's Choir - Kurt Marti Suite
by Dick Crockett, Still Another Jazz Show

CHRIS WALDEN BIG BAND & THE ST. JOHN'S CHOIR begin this edition of SAJS with the dynamic CHRIS MARTI SUITE. We devoted the first segment to this interesting piece and played selections one through eleven. "Hotel Jesus" features the talented tenor saxophonist Brandon Fields. This solo is brief and spectacular. An indicator of some more to come from this young man.
Kurt Marti worked as a priest in Switzerland. He was highly regarded as a... read more

Jack Mouse - Range of Motion
by John Lane, Percussive Notes

For decades, Jack Mouse has been a sideman for a long list of jazz greats, but Range of Motion represents his debut as a leader. Collaborating with several other Chicago-based musicians (Art Davis, trumpet; Scott Robinson, woodwinds; John McLean, guitar; Bob Bowman and Kelly Sill, bass), he has put together a terrific set of his original compositions.

Mouse?s high-energy and surehanded drumming is displayed front and center, but this is not... read more

Jim Norton Collective - Time Remembered: Compositions of Bill Evans
by Jon Ross, Downbeat

For a musical study of Bill Evans, baritone saxophonist Jim Norton didn't simply go for a greatest hits collection. Instead, he chose tunes that form a complete picture of the pianist, culling his collection from less-heard sources and transferring these small-ensemble recordings into big band charts.

The noted San Francisco-based sideman assembled some of the best Bay Area musicians for the tribute, players who excel at ensemble work. Each... read more

John Bishop with Jeff Johnson, Rick Mandyck, John Stowell - Scenes
by Fred Crafts, Eugene Register-Guard, November 30, 2001

Major stages and large audiences are the usual setting for guitarist John Stowell, drummer John Bishop, bassist Jeff Johnson and tenor saxophonist Rick Mandyck. But for their Eugene appearance on Dec. 7, they will be squeezed up against the front window of the downtown Eugene shop Provenance, giving what may be one of their most intimate performances ever. Call this an act of brotherly love. Bishop's sister, Christy Bishop, an avid jazz... read more
