A Seattle cat who, it might be said, travels the Coltrane Highway with a solid rhythm section of Bill Anschell, Chuck Deardord and Matt Jorgensen. Sometimes, for my ears, Cole steps over the cliff, as on the opener, "J & J." On five tunes, Cole brings in Randy Brecker on trumpet and flugelhorn. They fly first class on a trippy original. On "Slow Hot Wind," a Henry Mancini tune made famous by Sergio Mendes, Cole switches to soprano, and to good... read more
Chamber jazz or third stream - or whatever the amalgamation of western classical music and jazz is called - has had a handful of talented proponents sprinkled throughout the history of music. They have ranged from the more structured compositions of Igor Stravinsky to the looser improvisations of the Modern Jazz Quartet. Soprano saxophonist Jim Gailloreto has recently joined the ranks of these musicians.
On American Complex, Gailloreto is in... read more
After a powerful drum solo opens, The Future Was Yesterday, the debut album for Chicago/Paris sax player Brad Wheeler, the sax kicks in and one immediately is taken by the sound of a developed John Coltrane. As the album progresses, Wheeler takes more of his own direction and relies less on sheer emulation of the 'Trane. However, he keeps a very tight grasp on where the songs should lead and how they progress. As he goes through his solos, one... read more
Vibraphonist Joe Locke's year got off to a great start - beginning with an induction into the World Vibes Congress Hall of Fame alongside Milt Jackson - and continues to get better with the release of Subtle Disguise, his 36th album as a leader. The album, which features vocalist Raul Midon, guitarist Adam Rogers, saxophonist David Binney and pianist-vocalist Alina Engibaryan as special guests, walks an ambitious middle path between emotion and... read more
Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication and that is Jessica Williams!
Jessica Williams is a critically acclaimed pianist that has the reputation and the ability to go deep. Thanks to the misfortune of two rather serious health battles which she has documented and spoken of in great detail, Williams has embraced the lost art of melody with a string of sublime recordings on the consistently excellent Origin label. With Love is... read more
Seattle's Origin label has pretty much kept its releases within the realm of modern mainstream jazz, now dips its toe into the free jazz/avant garde pool with Language. Featuring Daniel Carter on alto, Rueben Radding on bass and Gregg Keplinger on a set of very busy drums, the trio works through more than 50 minutes of music not designed for the timid listener. Made up of all original compositions, the set kicks off with a passionate "Speak... read more
Best of 2015: Bay Area Jazz - Laurie Antonioli leads one of the better bands in the Bay Area, but for her gorgeous album "Varuna" (Origin), she reunites with the great American pianist Richie Beirach (who's been based in Germany since 2000). They're joined by bassist Pepe Berns on four of the album's 13 tracks, but working as a duo they spin gossamer spells out of standards like "Summer Night," the bossa nova "Gentle Rain" and... read more
Boston's Mark Zaleski pays tribute to his biggest influence with a set of Brubeck interpretations. While the compositions are recognizable, he does add new elements to them and avoids being too faithful, because you can just listen to the originals if you want to hear them the way Brubeck arranged them. "Blue Rondo a la Turk" opens the set, and it sounds like he added a shot of caffeine to the song, as it sounds even more tightly wound than the... read more
