Bob Sneider & Joe Locke - Nocturne for Ava
by Ric Bang, The Davis Enterprise

Some of the best jazz released is what I call "stealth" jazz: the music composed for and used in movie soundtracks. Unfortunately, the better the movie, the less one is likely to pay close attention to the soundtrack; its purpose is to accent what's happening on the screen...so, in a sense, if the score does its job properly, it's self-defeating. That's what soundtrack albums are for.

When you list the best movies you've seen, more often... read more

Diego Barber & Hugo Cipres - 411
by Domi, Republic of Jazz - Spain

The opening of the decidedly modern music on 411, the track entitled "Timanfaya," sounds like a spooky, welcome to a plugged-in netherworld. It begins with electric surges and wafflings, then glowing beeps punctuating electric washes before a shift into tune two, "all in," that sounds as if the late multiple reedman Eric Dolphy is hanging around the place, where he's hooked up with guitarist/composer Frank Zappa.

The music is the... read more

Tom Collier - Across the Bridge
by George W. Harris, Jazz Weekly

GUITAR HEAVEN! Why would I make that headline for an album put together by a guy who plays vibes and marimba? Well, what Tom Collier did was bring in two of today's most important guitarists, Larry Coryell and Bill Frisell, and even through in his bassist Dan Dean for a few swipes at the 6 strings. Then John Bishop and Ted Poor trade off at drums, and yet get some rock oriented jazz, or jazz oriented rock.

Coryell teams with marimba... read more

Florian Hoefner - Luminosity
by John McBeath, The Australian

Although German pianist - now Canada-based - Florian Hoefner has played at festivals throughout Europe, appeared on 10 previous recordings and toured extensively in the US and Canada, he's not as well known in Australia. This new album by his quartet, recorded in New York, features Australian bassist Sam Anning, with drummer Peter Kronreif and saxophonist Seamus Blake. These eight tracks display Hoefner's composing ability and his stunning... read more

Paul Tynan - quARTet
by Robert Rusch, Cadence

As a painter, even beginning with my earliest work, I realized the effect composition and improvisation had on my canvas work. I would often pick some music to try to trigger/inspire my painting. PAUL TYNAN [tpt/flg/corn] has essentially turned the tables on that on quARTet [Origin Records 82776]. For this CD, Tynan has taken a piece of artwork (canvas or photograph), spent intimate time with it and then fashioned a composition and improvisation... read more

Bobby Broom - My Shining Hour
by Matthias Kirsch, Gina Love Jazz (Berlin)

A collection of nine standards is the latest album by guitarist Bobby Broom. But this is not your typical standard fare - there is a Frederick Loewe song that hasn't been recorded very often ("The Heather On The Hill") and all of the tracks come to life by the shining arrangements for his trio which includes Dennis Carroll on bass and Makaya McCraven on drums.

Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen were responsible for recording his first album... read more

Joe Locke - Subtle Disguise
by Fiona Ord-Shrimpton, All About Jazz

TRACK OF THE DAY Subtle Disguise would not have come to actualization were it not for Locke's collaborators: Locke states that, "Raul Midón's contribution was essential to the project. His vast musical knowledge combined with his deep understanding of the Blues make him a unique artist. The same can be said of guitarist Adam Rogers; he dips into a lot of different stylistic territory on this album, and he's always brilliant, honest and... read more

Thomas Marriott - Constraints & Liberations
by Chris Robinson, Downbeat

The music on Constraints & Liberations operates and resides in that state between dreams and reality. The record slowly simmers with a restrained intensity and rarely comes to a boil.

The soloists are stellar and never fail to tell engaging stories. Thomas Marriott's trumpet sound is as lush and inviting as it comes. "Up From Under" and "Clues" give him plenty of room to slowly stretch out, like a tall man coming to from a deep sleep and... read more
