Seattle, Washington-based trumpeter/composer/blogger Jason Parker highly recommended that I listen to "Dialogue" (Origin Records), the new CD from the trio of trumpeter Thomas Marriott, Mark Taylor (alto saxophone) and drummer Matt Jorgensen. It's actually the ensemble's 2nd CD which was released in 2010 in Marriott's name as "Human Spirit." That's now the name of the group.
The 8 tracks here were recorded in October of 2011 at... read more
Geof Bradfield's debut, Rule of Three, was widely praised in such places and by such critics as The New York Times' Ben Ratliff, Nate Dorward of Cadence Magazine, Downbeat, Howard Reichs in The Chicago Tribune, noted sax player and critic Jay Collins, and by many other media and reviewers. Though I haven't heard it, I believe them, based on the music contained in this spectacular disc. Working with a standard jazz quartet and pretty much... read more
The recordings of the album are taken from a live performance at the Israel Museum, Jerusalem on June 27, 2023. With "Persistence Of Memory" the sextet around woodwind player Alon Farber opens. The Ensemble Hagiga and guest Dave Douglas are characterized by an impressive brass power, consisting of a trumpeter, a trombonist, a soprano and alto saxophonist and a tenor saxophonist or clarinetist. In tutti they almost sound like a small big band. At... read more
Take some lesser Greek mythology, mix it with some 50s flavored jazz into classical and you get a modern thing that sounds like it could be equally at home with the art minded or as a diversion for kids almost ala "Peter & the Wolf". Not exactly something you'd expect to be coming out of Chicago, this is a wild and wonderful set that exists in a time zone all it's... read more
Bassist Lorin Cohen, born and raised in Chicago and currently living in New York, has toured extensively with the great Monty Alexander. And so it is only natural that the Caribbean also finds its way onto this diverse and exciting album.
Lorin wanted to use mallet instruments for his eight compositions and he got an ace team of people surrounding him here: master vibraphonist Joe Locke is featured throughout the album and leads, together... read more
4 1/2 STARS Discussing "roots" in the context of jazz, a good starting point is the Mississippi delta, down in New Orleans, where the music of trumpeters King Oliver and Louis Armstrong grew strong. And then there's the rich earth of the delta in north western Mississippi, up near Clarksdale, where the blues grew and blossomed. The roots from both these areas were, of course, transplanted from Africa.
Chicago-based... read more
In 1999 Thomas Marriott won the prestigious Carmine Caruso International Jazz Trumpet Competition sponsored by the International Trumpet Guild and the Herb Albert Foundation. Michael Caldwell wrote in the March 2000 International Trumpet Guild Journal: "[His] confident stage demeanor and intense interest in the rhythm section adds depth and character to his performance. A particularly interesting aspect of Marriott's playing is his ability to... read more
Guitarist Corey Christiansen explores the rich melodic legacy of traditional American cowboy tunes, with a few of his originals, on Lone Prairie. Although Christiansen has an acclaimed past as a straight-ahead jazz guitarist and educator, he really is a stylistic chameleon with a blues-based foundation, authentic in a variety of settings. His use of chord melody and gliding lines on "Streets of Laredo" is as convincing as his rocked-out,... read more
