Guitarist Bobby Broom has had a career in jazz envious of many. He's played with Miles Davis, Stanley Turrentine, Dr. John, Charles "Mighty Burner" Earland, and Sonny Rollins, to name but a few. Born in Harlem and currently living in Evanston, Illinois, Broom began playing the guitar in junior high school and credits his first guitar teacher with trying to point him in a jazz direction. He credits George Benson's Bad album for helping drive... read more
A Worldly Soundtrack: Mattan Klein and Ezequiel Hezi Jait's "Countryside Motorways" Offers a Panoramic Jazz Journey. 4-STARS
Composer and flutist Mattan Klein, a man of many cultures and wide musical reach, is the creative force behind ZurHub, a genre-defying collective of musicians that draws from far more than its Israeli roots. Co-founded in 2017 with guitarist Ezequiel Hezi Jait, the ensemble is the fruit of years of... read more
This is a fine big band with the likes of Carl Saunders and Kim Richmond on it and any band with these strong players has a lot to say.
"When You Wish Upon A Star" features Kim Richmond's muscular alto solo which makes this star shine in all its glory, no need to wish upon it.
"People Will Say We're In Love".....Tierney Sutton's sibilance slips swiftly sliding into this tune soon after the vocal starts with a bit of nasal quality added... read more
If Paul Desmon was, as he proclaimed, the "world's slowest alto player," then Matt Otto may be the world's quietest tenor man. On the eight originals that comprise Red, Otto's dynamics rarely rise above the level of an intimate conversation. His delivery is so relaxed and subtle that even the intake of breath is sometimes audible. But although Otto doesn't strut, he does quietly demonstrate an admirable control of his instrument and of chord... read more
The fourth album from Alon Farber's Hagiga band was inspired by Eddie Harris's 'Freedom Jazz Dance' and is a gorgeous blend of musical flavours and colours, swing, Moroccan, funk and Brazilian music that makes up that melting pot of the Israeli soundtrack.
But, it was Alon's arrangement of 'You'll See The Way' that really hooked me onto this album and when you take on a Matti Caspi song and make it sound as good as the original, you know... read more
Hooray for David Sills for a few reasons. He opts for a tenor sound which is rich and righteous AND on this recording, he includes two of the world's greatest players in Alan Broadbent, piano and Gary Foster, alto sax. If you haven't heard them, pick up this CD. I promise you'll be mesmerized. To the rhythm section, add Larry Koonse, guitar; Putter Smith, bass and Tim Pleasant, drums. That all makes for an outstanding aggregation. But back... read more
Scott Reeves has written and recorded for the hottest big bands and has taught at the finest Jazz schools including Julliard and, currently, at the City University of New York (CUNY). His textbooks on Jazz improvisation are required reading everywhere. After assembling his own 16-piece Big Band in 2008, he has finally released his debut album, Portraits and Places (Origin 82710).
The album features seven Reeves original compositions in... read more
Major stages and large audiences are the usual setting for guitarist John Stowell, drummer John Bishop, bassist Jeff Johnson and tenor saxophonist Rick Mandyck. But for their Eugene appearance on Dec. 7, they will be squeezed up against the front window of the downtown Eugene shop Provenance, giving what may be one of their most intimate performances ever. Call this an act of brotherly love. Bishop's sister, Christy Bishop, an avid jazz... read more
