Origin Records Reviews

Tom Collier - Across the Bridge
by Dave Rogers, WTJU - Richmond

Collier plays vibes and marimba on these nine original compositions and he changes moods and styles with with ease and command. He also keeps terrific company in a group of musicians who can bring their special talents to augment his shifts. Guitarists Larry Coryell and Bill Frisell add the wonderful coloring one would expect of them and bassist Dan Dean even takes a turn on guitar while maintaining his melodic and rhythmic bass. Ted Poor and... read more

Geof Bradfield - Urban Nomad
by Paul Abella, Chicago Jazz Magazine

Geof Bradfield is the latest Chicago artist to record a superb record for Seattle's Origin Records. Linked to one of the baddest rhythm sections that Chicago has to offer, this album has the whole package: groove, great tunes and stellar soloing. It would be easy enough to end the review here with a two-word benediction?buy this?but instead, I will elaborate on why this is such a good album.

First off, as always, it's about the players.... read more

Phil Kelly - Convergence Zone
by Stephen Fratallone, Jazz Connection

Composer and arranger Phil Kelly has written volumes of stuff during the past 40 years for recording artists, bands, symphony pops, film, television, and commercials and now at age 65, he has finally gotten around to write some music for himself. The fruit of his labors are on his debut CD for Origin Records, Convergence Zone: Phil Kelly And The NW Prevailing Winds.

Convergence Zone is an apt title for this project. A "convergence zone" is... read more

John Moulder - Bifrost
by John Ephland, Downbeat

***1/2 stars

The first thing one may notice is Moulder's penchant for going back and forth between his acoustic and electric guitars. That he plays his six- an 12-string acoustics in a manner that at times might recall Ralph Towner's music with Jan Garbarek (thanks to the full-bodied tenor saxophone sounds of Bendik Hofseth) is not surprising. Bifrost sports Hofseth with fellow Norwegian bassist Arild Andersen, both whom help give the... read more

Karrin Allyson - A Kiss for Brazil
by Dorothea Gängel, Jazz'N'More (Switzerland)

4-STARS The singer Karrin Allyson, who comes from Kansas, is dedicated to Brazilian music. "A Kiss for Brasil" is already the third album dedicated to these rhythms. This time, Allyson has brought the celebrated singer, guitarist and songwriter Rosa Passos to her side as a special guest. Passos contributes two songs to the album: "O Grande Amor" and "Month of March in Salvador (Dunas)". Victor Goncalves on piano and accordion and Rafael... read more

George Colligan - The Endless Mysteries
by Martin Z. Kasdan Jr., Louisville Music News

Pianist George Colligan's trio mates are probably more recognized than he, but they are not just on board for star value; Jack DeJohnette and Larry Grenadier add to the leader's sometimes challenging work. Colligan's liner notes refer to having played in DeJohnette's band, and the musical empathy is apparent from the beginning; if he hadn't mentioned only one prior playing experience with Grenadier, one wouldn't have known it from... read more

Brittany Anjou - Enamigo Reciprokataj
by Nicola Barin, Tracce di Jazz (Italy)

Brittany Anjou: the virtuoso of the piano A mad and powerful pianist who makes us jump from the chair, that's who Brittany Anjou is. When you think that the trio plan has already been able to say almost everything, the talented Seattle artist surprises us. Her first trio album, Enamiĝo Reciprokataj , was released in February for the Origin Records label , accompanied by Greg Chudzik on double bass and Nicholas Anderson on drums, which... read more

by Troy Dostert, All About Jazz

4-STARS Bassist Rodney Whitaker has been a huge presence in Michigan jazz for decades, with his leadership of the Michigan State University jazz program complementing his many other projects and giving him the opportunity to mentor upcoming generations of jazz talent. He has become a crucial ambassador for the music as well, with community outreach being a critical aspect of his mission. One of his most essential endeavors has been his... read more
