Xose Miguélez - Ontology
by Iñigo Ortega Medrano, Distrito Jazz (Spain)

From Galicia comes another new sample of the strength of jazz in that area. The saxophonist Xosé Miguélez is the protagonist with his 'Ontology'.

Miguélez, apart from his work in 'Ontology', is part of the XMA trio, together with the double bass player Xacobe Mart'nez Antelo of which we recently referenced his latest work 'Capturas' - http://www.distritojazz.com/discos-jazz/xacobe -martinez-antelo-trio-capturas - and also works alongside... read more

Kim Richmond Concert Jazz Orchestra - Refractions
by Reverend Bob, Ex Cathedra

With four trumpets, four trombones plus tuba, five woodwinds, two French horns, guitar, drums, Latin percussion, mallets, two basses, and piano, Kim Richmond's Concert Jazz Orchestra is a formidable ensemble just getting off the bus. Especially the woodwinds, who are each toting an entire music store. Throw in Kim Richmond's brooding, playful, ecstatic arrangements, and you can tell pretty fast that this ain't no Glenn Miller band.

Scenes - Trapeze
by Chris Spector, Midwest Record

With the original line up coming together for the first time in 20 years, they play together like they haven't missed a step. With most of the tunes by the MIA sax man who originally left for health reasons, everyone is right back in step. With a Seattle take on a New York feel for modern sax jazz, it's that hypnotic kind of set that breathes well in the background or foreground, powered by pros that know how to... read more

Scenes - Silent Photographer
by Eric Prinzing, Jazzreview.com

Silent Photographer is an excellent trio recording. The tone is generally hushed and introspective, and the improvisations are searching and cerebral. Though the group does utilize dissonance, space and tense harmony, the music never feels alienating. The musicianship here is first rate, and the group's interplay is equally impressive. Further credit also goes John Stowell (long an underrated and original guitarist) and Jeff Johnson for... read more

Keigo Hirakawa - Pixel
by Editor, CD Journal (Japan)

Jazz pianist Keigo Hirakawa, currently residing in Dayton in America, will release his new album "Pixel" on June 16th. The recording took place in August 2022 at Big Sky Recordings in Ann Arbor, Michigan, featuring Hirakawa (piano) along with a quintet lineup consisting of Rafael Statin (sax), Brandon Scott Coleman (guitar), Robert Hurst (bass), and Alex White (drums). Coleman, who served as the producer, contributed one track, and all other... read more

Gloria Cooper - Dedicated To You
by Marcia Hillman, All About Jazz/New York

This is a very pleasing offering that came as a result of Gloria Cooper's editing of the Second Floor Music publication Sing Jazz. Many of the songs covered in the publication she was not familiar with, prompting her to record a new CD featuring some of this material. A large number these songs started out their lives as instrumentals with lyrics added much later. Because of this, it seems quite appropriate that Cooper's voice is treated as an... read more

George Colligan - The Endless Mysteries
by Bobby Reed, DownBeat

Pianist and educator George Colligan's profile continues to rise. He may not be as well known in some circles as his outstanding trio partners on this project - bassist Larry Grenadier and Colligan's frequent employer, drummer Jack DeJohnette - but he certainly has the chops to hang with them. The Endless Mysteries, Colligan's 24th album as a leader, contains 10 original compositions, many of which the keyboardist developed while playing with... read more

Rob Lockart - Parallel Lives
by Dan McClenaghan, All About Jazz.com

The problem with saxophonist Rob Lockart's debut CD, Parallel Lives, is that it's hard to get past the opening cut, the America Songbook classic, Arthur Altman's "All Or Nothing At All." It's a problem of the sublime variety?this rendition of the familiar tune is magnificent. Lockart is locked into the emotion of the tune, the aching, sometimes searing uncertainty of the outcome of the ultimatum, the possibility of ending up on the wrong side of... read more
