Matt Jorgensen +451 - Hope
by Brian Kidd, North Seattle Herald

With the March 16 release of their latest album, "Hope," Matt Jorgensen+451 stand on the border of nostalgic reflection and future aspiration, peripherally looking back and forward. They pay tribute while propelling original compositions into innovative, cosmic sounds.

Behind the drum kit is Matt Jorgensen, but it is the entire band that is behind this evolving and warm music.

Following "The Road Begins Here" and "Quiet Silence"... read more

Eric Jacobson - Heading Home
by Jack Bowers, All About Jazz

4-STARS There is a sensible piece of advice known to every baseball batter that has been taken to heart by Milwaukee-based trumpeter Eric Jacobson's concerning his hard-hitting quintet: come out swinging. Which is precisely what happens on Heading Home, Jacobson's second (or perhaps third) recording as leader of his own ensemble, whose opening number, "Survival," proves beyond a doubt that everyone in the lineup—all eyes focused on the... read more

Anthony Branker & Imagine - What Place Can Be for Us?
by Richard Kamins, Step Tempest

Dr. Anthony Branker is quite an accomplished person with a list of achievements that would fill this page. I spoke to him in 2017 at the time Origin Records released "Beauty Within", his seventh album of original compositions (and six issued by the Seattle, WA-based label). At that time, he had recently stepped down as the head (and founder) of the Jazz Studies Program at Princeton--he currently is Adjunct Professor at the Mason Gross School... read more

Piet Verbist Zygomatik - Cattitude
by Erno Elsinga, Jazzenzo (Dutch)

In the Netherlands, the Belgian musician Piet Verbist especially as the former bassist of the Jef Neve Trio. Domestically Verbist counts as an old warhorse who has played and recorded with numerous international musicians and he records for the American Origin Records label.

From his debut Zygomatik from 2012 to the controversial compositions on "Cattitude," Verbist makes a leap forward. The rhythmic accompaniment under the powerful mix of... read more

Peter Erskine & The JAM Music Lab All-Stars - Vienna to Hollywood: Impressions of E.W. Korngold & Max Steiner
by Mark Griffith, Modern Drummer

Hopefully you have already read Peter Eskine's column this month on the making of his new record, so I'll skip the backstory, and just say that this is the best recording that Erskine has done as a leader since 3 Nights in LA. But it this a very different type of record, 3 Nights in LA was a freewheeling blowing date, Vienna to Hollywood is a carefully planned and arranged recording project with Erskine and Danny... read more

John Moulder - The Eleventh Hour
by Dan Healy, Chicago Jazz Magazine

The Eleventh Hour: Live At The Green Mill features guitarist John Moulder showcasing his original compositions with a stunning quintet. To put it succinctly, this recording represents modern jazz at its best. Moulder?s compositions are amazingly creative and stimulating, taking fascinating twists and turns and also giving his talented bandmates the freedom to explore and take his pieces in unexpected musical directions.

The group... read more

Mattias Svensson - Embrace
by Dee Dee McNeil, Making A Scene

Swedish bassist, Mattias Svensson, first met pianist Bill Mays when they recorded in a Japanese studio in 2009. It was Svensson's debut trio recording. This inspired them to work together in the future. They toured together and planned to record more awesome music. Mattias assembled this session in Copenhagen with Mays and drummer Morten Lund, his longtime trio mate with the famed Jan Lundgren Trio.

Their opening tune is "My Toots Toots... read more

Bruce Barth Trio - Dedication
by Tom Haugen, Take Effect

An important piece of the New York jazz scene for 4 decades now, Bruce Barth brings his inimitable piano skills to these 7 well thought out and rich pieces that welcome Vincente Archer (bass) and Montez Coleman (drums).

"George's Party (For George Perry)" opens the listen with a bouncy and frisky display of warm keys, swift drumming and fluid bass lines, and "Courage (For All Of Us)" follows with a calmer display of agile piano and strategic... read more
