Dave Hanson - Blues Sky
by George W Harris, Jazz Weekly

Dave Hanson plays piano and Fender with his team of Mark Simon/b, Paul Romaine/dr and guest Wil Swindler/ts-as on this collection of bluesy originals. On piano, Hanson has that classic warm feel a la Kenny Barron, as he shifts gears on the post bopping "Arnhem" and is lyrically stately around Romaine's brushes during "As It Was And Is", niftily veering through Simon's bass lines on "Cross Steps" and boogalooing with him on "Dylan Dream". His... read more

Richard Sussman - Continuum
by John Barron, The Jazz Word

Noted composer and pianist Richard Sussman reunites with his quintet from the 1970s for Continuum, a dynamic set of multi-genre instrumental jazz. Drummer Jeff Williams, bassist Mike Richmond, tenor saxophonist Jerry Bergonzi and trumpeter Randy Brecker, who replaces Tom Harrell from the original quintet line-up, accompany Sussman through eight of his original pieces and covers of "Alone Together" and "Theme for Ernie." Guitarist Mike stern... read more

Michael Waldrop - Time Frames
by Michael Ambrosino, 33third.org

Michael Waldrop skillfully explores the concentric circles of classical percussion and... read more

Collier & Dean - Sleek Buick
by Dave Sumner, Wondering Sound

Real nice contemporary fusion recording, led out by vibraphonist Tom Collier, and also including some powerhouse names from the contemporary scene like Ernie Watts, Ted Poor, Alex Acuna and Don Grusin. Album starts out with a bluegrass ditty, with mandolinist Andy Leftwich spurring them on, then moves into more common territory. Songs have a nice motion to them, "Lettercollum/Paris" in particular, which is all kinds of likable. Typically not... read more

Karrin Allyson - A Kiss for Brazil
by Paul Abella, WDCB, Chicago

Vocalist Karrin Allyson has now made three albums focusing on the music of Brazil: 1999's From Paris to Rio, Imagina - Songs of Brazil in 2007, and now in 2024, A Kiss for Brazil. She's clearly very comfortable with the material, and that makes this newest album a treat. She's joined by an excellent group with Vitor Concalves on keys and accordion, Yotam Silberstein on guitar, Harvie S on bass and Rafael Barata on drums. There are Brazilian... read more

Paul Tynan - quARTet
by Wolfgang Giese, Musik an sich (Germany)

Today I introduce a record of a Canadian jazz musician, quartet of the trumpeter, flugelhorn and cornetist Paul Tynan. Yes, the word art (ART) is already in the title, and I can only underline it, because this music is great art! It should also be understood that one should consider this publication as a Gesamtkunstwerk. In addition to the four musicians, six different artists are presented in the booklet, in particular Jennifer Sandquist,... read more

David Friesen - A Light Shining Through
by Rick Anderson, CD Hotlist - New Releases for Libraries

The origin story of this recording is sweet and slightly heartbreaking. David Friesen's mother is from Ukraine, and after a long career as a boundary-pushing bassist and composer he was finally able to visit that country on tour in 2015. There he had the opportunity to perform and record with the National Academic Symphonic Band, and later recorded these sessions with the Kyiv Mozart String Quartet. That was in 2021, and the combination of war... read more

Carlos Vega - Art of the Messenger
by Luiz Athayde, Class of Sounds (Brazil)

And let's go with jazz, let's go with Carlos Vega. And I'm not referring to the renowned drummer, but to the accomplished saxophonist from Miami, Florida, and, importantly, with Puerto Rican DNA.

The Latin footprint is nothing new in his short solo catalog, composed by Bird's Ticket (2016) and Bird's Up (2017), but it is a natural "up", as is expected in at least most musicians who propose themselves to record a phonographic... read more
