Storms/Nocturnes - VIA
by Joachym Ettel, Ultimo Lbeck (Germany)

"The fact that vibraphonist Joe Locke and pianist Geoffrey Keezer make a highly captivating team has already been established at JazzBaltica 2007 where they created extraordinary moments, often even outshining the sum of all components. Locke and Keezer have always been sharing a similar musical philosophy and know how to drive each other on to create a live interplay that culminates in the most fiery artistic passion. With the third... read more

Corey Christiansen - Lone Prairie
by Martin Z. Kasdan Jr., Louisville Music News

Guitarist Corey Christiansen shines on his new album, which includes new renditions of the title track, "El Paso," and others from the folk/country canon, as well as three originals and Ennio Morricone's "Il Grande Massacro." Joined by pianist Steve Allee and others, Christiansen seems to meld influences from Pat Metheny and Bill Frisell into his own voice. He pretty much plays "Streets of Laredo" as straight as a jazz guitarist can,... read more

Emma Larsson - Sing To the Sky
by Matthias Kirsch, Gina Loves Jazz (Berlin)

Here's a singer from Sweden who released two albums in Europe before she left the continent and settled in New York in 2011. "Sing To The Sky" is Emma Larsson's first record in the US and features seven originals plus two covers. Her voice is wonderfully pure and her intonation and timing just perfect. But it is also her ability to write innovative, original and interesting songs that make this album a great trip.

Pianist Shedrick Mitchell... read more

Ryan Cohan - Originations
by Georges Tonla Briquet, Jazz'halo (Belgium)

The first notes you catch in the morning often determine your mood throughout the day. One tip: wake up to the tones of American pianist and composer with Palestinian roots Ryan Cohan in his 'The Hours Before Dawn'. A slow unveiling of a whole world that ranges from jazz and classical to influences from the Middle East (Jewish and Arabic) and South America. Music layers that slide over and into each other like tectonic plates in slow... read more

Bill Anschell - More To The Ear Than Meets The Eye
by John Nyerges, www.jazzradio247.com

This Origin Records 2006 release starts with deconstructing the melody Night & Day and has wonderful rhythms (!!) floating over the bar lines. Monkisms, use of space, ? time feel, and the chordal voicings are all very musical. The accompaniment of Miller and Martinez is top shelf here (as is everyone on this CD).
Then comes an original tune more rhythmic in it's melody than say a more typical linear approach as in an older song-style standard ... read more

Brent Jensen - Trios
by Ric Bang, The Davis Enterprise

This album uses two unusual trio instrumentations.

Three of the tracks feature alto sax, guitar and acoustic bass; the remaining cuts feature alto sax, acoustic bass and drums. Have a listen before you scoff ... they really work!

Brent Jensen has played alto sax with some of the country's standout jazz groups, including those fronted by Gene Harris, Bobby Shew, Bill Watrous and Joe La Barbara. Jensen achieves a sax tone that falls... read more

Dana Hall - Into the Light
by Aaron Cohen, Downbeat, April 2010

When Dana Hall talks about global connections or musical nuances, his words convey a quiet authority. The drummer's background - which embraced equally intense levels of science and technology alongside music and scholarship - has provided him with a unique perspective on those large and small concepts. And Hall's recent CD debut as a quintet leader, Into The Light (Origin), shows how he blends those disparate ideas.

Today, Hall is... read more

Jessica Williams - Songs For A New Century
by Robert Doerschuk, Downbeat, December 2008

On Songs For A New Century (****) Jessica Williams proves that she excels in the solo format. These pieces may owe something to her decision to remove the music stand and fall-board, unfold the front part of the lid and lower the level of her seat. What matters more is the results of this tinkering, and while outside effects do crop up, such as the sparking string plucks on "Toshiko," the effect is one of consonance and elegance, more... read more
