Kim Richmond Ensemble - Live At Cafe Metropol
by Ric Bang, The Davis Enterprise, Feb 7, 2008

"Live at Cafe Metropol" is this sextet's first live album, following one earlier studio release; members of the group also have been featured on CDs by other groups. Kim Richmond, once a member of the Stan Kenton orchestra, plays alto and soprano saxophones; trumpeter John Daversa is the son of Jay Daverso who, like Richmond, was a member of the Kenton group. Joey Sellers is the trombonist; pianists Rich Eames and Brian Freidland split the tunes... read more

Dominic J. Marshall - Spirit Speech
by Serge Julien, Cultuurpodium - Netherlands

Speech Spirit is the third album by pianist Dominic J. Marshall. The 25-year-old Scot gets one after another accolade from experts and enthusiasts. And for good reason, as his new album presents the musician in an unprecedented and artistic level of play that is full of influences.

Dominic J. Marshall studied classical piano for ten years under the watchful eye of his father. In 2010, Dominic decided to go to college, study jazz, and... read more

Scenes - Silent Photographer
by Doug Simpson, Audiophile Audition

Scenes: placing modern artistic jazz in an empathic trio setting.

The Pacific Northwest is full of jazz musicians who deserve more notice outside the region. The Seattle/Portland trio Scenes is one example. Guitarist John Stowell, bassist Jeff Johnson and Origin Records honcho/drummer John Bishop first came together, along with tenor saxophonist Rick Mandyck, on the 2001 album Scenes. Since that time, Bishop, Stowell and Johnson have... read more

Real Talk: A Conversation with Trumpeter David Weiss
On the rigors of bandleading, and the discovery of rare tunes by Freddie Hubbard, Slide Hampton

Significant events can happen quietly in our jazz world (another way of saying they're getting ignored). Like the fact that trumpeter David Weiss recorded a previously unknown Freddie Hubbard composition, "Rebop," on his 2024 sextet release Auteur (Origin). There's a previously... read more

Jessica Williams - The Art of the Piano
by Doug Ramsey, Rifftides

Williams' 2800-word liner essay declares renewed and deepened love for the piano and rededicated independence from the strictures and orthodoxies of the music establishment. She cites an internet video clip of Glenn Gould playing Bach as "...a life-altering event" that took her back to "...a music founded on the purity and clarity and infinite tonal colorations of the piano itself." Those are qualities I have never found missing from her work,... read more

Peter Lerner - Continuation
by Ric Bang, Jazz Scan

Technology has impacted jazz in a particularly nifty way, by allowing artists and groups to produce their own music with considerable ease. They no longer have to sell themselves to record producers, in order to make their efforts available to the buying public; they can record, manufacture and distribute their own music. As a result, we're increasingly exposed to musicians who may be appreciated in specific cities or states, but remain unknown... read more

Carlos Vega - Bird's Ticket
by Dick Metcalf, Improvijazzation

In addition to Carlos's totally engaging saxophone, you've got Victor Garcia on Trumpet, Stu Mindeman doing Piano and Rhodes, Josh Ramos with Acoustic Bass and Xavier Breaker on Drum set on this all-original set... the opener alone makes it clear that this is a jazz group you'll want to listen to over & over again, and takes me (way) back to my earliest days in jazz listening... "A Confluence in Chi-Town" clocks in right at 9:00, and will have... read more

Scenes - Silent Photographer
by DS, Western Australian Guitar Player Society

Always great to hear John play in such an interactive trio! The CD features tunes written by jazz composers/players. "Black Eyes" is a Wayne Shorter tune. The guitar solo has nice triplets and chordal passages, nice electric bass solo follows before guitar and drum trades. "Three French Nuns" by Stowell shows a more angular and moody side to his playing. "Chan's Song" is by Herbie Hancock, it is a feature for bass with some lovely... read more
