What is it that bassist Piet Verbist has with the cheekbone? In Latin "zygomaticum." The shape of the cheekbone has to do with the sight of the face, unlike for example the tibia which is much more uniform than the cheekbone. The word in the name of this quintet intrigues and makes you look for an explanation, that might follow when you listen to the music on "Cattitude," which is multiform. In eight compositions, Piet Verbist creates a pluralistic atmosphere. The danger is that a potpourri arises that doesn't make sense. But that's not the case. Even though we hear influences from funk, soul and compositions with a rocking groove, it remains beautiful together and flows effortlessly from one into the other. The atmosphere on "Cattitude" is fantastic. From dreamy languid to spiky expressive. Images of a city that wakes up and lives, sparkling, heated up, looks for coolness and then, slowly and fidgety at first but later on willingly fluttering into the arms of the night. The combination of Wurtlitzer / Fender Rhodes and saxophones works brilliantly. It makes the sound wide and creates fascinating dialogues. Verbist's bass roars and slides, is rhythmic and harmonizing. "Cattitude" is an album that remains long in the CD player because the stories of this quintet hit you. Pluralism which meets in one comprehensive idiom, the Zygomatik. That's Verbist's jazz: particularly endearing, very sightly. A player based in the tradition, but looking ahead and not afraid of new forms, as sincere jazz should be.
