John Bishop, Seattle-based drummer, educator, and owner of the Origin Records label has over four decades of performance and recording experience with appearances on more than 100 albums. He was inducted into the 'Seattle Jazz Hall of Fame' in 2008 and his latest project 'Antwerp' is Mr. Bishop's first album under his own name in 15 years.
The genesis of Mr. Bishop's latest project began with his first meeting with pianist Bram Weijters and bassist Piet Verbist in Belgium in 2010 via a quartet with trumpeter Chad McCullough. John, Bram, and Piet formed a trio which reunited yearly conducted tours, performed 100+ concerts, and released three albums over 8 years.
Continuing yearly trips to Antwerp following the pandemic, John's thought of recording a trio with Piet & Bram came in a "flash of gratitude" for their friendship, musicianship, and the ongoing adventures that the first Antwerp visit inspired. Their sound has evolved from mutual admiration and the joy of creation.
This is Mr. John Bishop performing "Lawns" (Carla Bley, composer) featuring John Bishop (drums, leader, producer), Bram Weijters (piano) & Piet Verbist (bass) | Antwerp | 2023 A solid arrangement and homage to the late, great Carla Bley!
