4-STARS The American flautist Andrea Brachfeld has recorded an impressive new album with her quartet Insight. She uses a wide variety of flutes, from the normal C flute to the alto flute and various bamboo flutes, which add an exciting touch of world music. Her trio is spectacular, and pianist Bill O'Connell in particular impresses with his gripping up-tempo improvisations. Andrea Brachfeld has tailored eight pieces with different characters to herself and her band: modern jazz with a driving tempo that allows the flute to create light, floating lines and pinpoint hits on themes. In "Child of the Earth" (with spoken words by Andrea Brachfeld) the rhythm section can really let its hair down. The ballad "Quingaulit" unfolds a special mood with the lower-tuned, always airy-sounding alto flute, "The Hut Song" catches the ear with Colombian clay and African bamboo flutes with the band's Latin vibe. A very harmonious production!
