5-STARS Trumpeter Jared Hall is one of the notable musicians who recorded "Influences", a tribute album for some of the most important trumpeters in jazz history, including Woody Shaw, Roy Hargrove, Brian Lynch, Wallace Roney, Tom Harrell, Clifford Brown and Nicholas Payton. With his well-rehearsed quartet, which includes Tal Cohen, Michael Glynn and John Bishop, Jared Hall impresses with imaginative improvisations and a total of eight compositions that he dedicates to the trumpeters. The only exception is the Gigi Gryce composition "Minority", with which Jared Hall commemorates the trumpeter Clifford Brown. The album starts with "Song For Shaw", a blues in which all musicians shine as soloists. This is followed by the wonderful ballad "Dear Roy", which is dedicated to the untimely death of trumpeter Roy Hargrove and in which Jared Hall impresses with a wonderfully vocal solo. "Professor B. L." is dedicated to the great trumpeter and teacher Brian Lynch, in which Jared Hall and Tal Cohen shine with rousing solos. The only two tracks without a dedication are "Let the Children Dance", which resembles a children's song, and the ballad "Beyond the Thorns", in which Jared Hall impresses with his wonderfully muted trumpet.
