Playing mostly soprano sax, Kate Olson leads her band of Conner Eisenmenger/tp-tb-ef, Tim Cazrey/b-g, Evan Woodle/dr and guests on a collection of mostly originals, mostly with a Monkish mood.
Her sonic allegiance to the bebop master is evident in the fun sharp angles that her soprano glides through as on the acute "Bumbling Thumbs Blues" and the sweetly boppish "All Pear Shaped" that has her teamed with Eisenmenger's sandied brass. Likewise, she digs in with Woodle on "Weigh Out" in spherical fashion, and then takes on Alice Coltrane's "Translinear Light" with a mix of elegance and free form friskiness with guests Wayne Horvitz/p and Geoff Harper/b.Carey supplies some rich strums on the modal "ShouldaCoulda" and leads the sway to "Nominally Challenged" while Olson gives some gospel feel to the swaying title tune. Olson goes well.
