Chicago Jazz Orchestra with Cyrille Aimee - Burstin' Out!
by George Fendel, Oregon Jazz Scene

This CD could have easily been released under the name of the singer on the session, Cyrille Aimée. She sings on all 12 tracks and that, in essence, makes it her album as much as the Chicago Jazz Orchestra's. The CJO has been making music since 1978, and I'd suggest that if they were out of New York, we'd all be well acquainted with them. The arrangements are picture perfect, and the soloists tell the story with profound musicianship. The... read more

Bobby Broom - My Shining Hour
by Glenn Daniels, The Jazz Page.com

Guitarist Bobby Broom once again proves himself the stellar musician on his latest creation. My Shining Hour features Broom and his trio of drummer Dennis Carroll and drummer Makaya McCraven in a session captured through a single stereo microphone, and spot mics, with all three players in the same room, interacting eye to eye. You can hear it too, and it works. What Broom also does on this effort is to select timeless tunes and perform... read more

Les DeMerle - The Jazz Spirit of Christmas
by Carol Swanson, christmasreview.com

So solid, so sweet! The Jazz Spirit of Christmas is classic jazz, through and through! This generous album (well over an hour of music!) will satisfy your every jazz need this holiday season.

The dynamic Les DeMerle (drums, vocals) is the moving force behind this project; his wife Bonnie Eisele (vocals, percussion) has been his sizzlin' musical partner for 17 years. The other three ensemble members are Ken Poplowski (tenor sax & clarinet),... read more

Nanami Haruta - The Vibe
by Cree McCree, DownBeat (Interview)

BORN IN SAPPORO, JAPAN, Nanami Haruta started playing piano at age 5 and gravitated towards to the trombone when she was only 8 years old. The instrument was taller than she was. "They do have smaller trombones for kids but I just used a normal one," she recalled from Michigan State University, where she's currently enrolled in the jazz studies program. "What first made me want to play it was that the sound of the name trombone was funny," she... read more

Seattle Repertory Jazz Orchestra - Sacred Music of Duke Ellington
by Evan Dobbins, Jazz Radio 247

In the jazz world, recreating much of Ellington's repertoire can be a touchy subject. Some feel that what Ellington's bands created is so unique, that to revisit it would be akin to repainting the Sistine Chapel -- that some things are meant to stand alone, admired but untouched. When it comes to attempting to simply imitate these works, I would have to agree. On their recent release, Sacred Music of Duke Ellington, The Seattle Repertory Jazz... read more

Geof Bradfield - Urban Nomad
by Jan P. Dennis, Audiophile Audition

Geof Bradfield's debut, Rule of Three, was widely praised in such places and by such critics as The New York Times' Ben Ratliff, Nate Dorward of Cadence Magazine, Downbeat, Howard Reichs in The Chicago Tribune, noted sax player and critic Jay Collins, and by many other media and reviewers. Though I haven't heard it, I believe them, based on the music contained in this spectacular disc. Working with a standard jazz quartet and pretty much... read more

Ryan Cohan - Originations
by George W Harris, Jazz Weekly

Pianist and composer Ryan Cohan brings in the Kaia String Quartet of Victoria Moreira/v, Naomi Culp/v, Amanda Grimm/va and Hope DeCelle/cel to rich effect as it blends in with his jazz combo to rich satisfaction.

The team of John Wojciechowski/cl-fl-afl-ts, Geof Bradfield/bcl-ss, Tito Carillo/tp-fh, James Cammack/b, Michael Raynor/dr and Omar Musfi/perc keep the music creative yet accessible with moods changing like Colorado weather.

Clay Giberson - Pastures
by Rick Anderson, CD Hotlist

As the title suggests, pianist and composer Clay Giberson's latest outing as a leader draws on influences from American roots music - though those influences are often well below the sonic surface. His arrangement of the familiar Shaker hymn "Simple Gifts" takes that theme off in a million different directions, and his take on the Kern/Gershwin tune "Long Ago and Far Away" (which features a string quartet alongside his trio) is also quite... read more
