Josh Nelson - The Sky Remains
by Dick Metcalf, Improvijazzation

Josh's piano and compositional work got high marks from me in issue # 155, and this new 2017 release has even more sensitive songs... per the liner notes, it's somewhat of a "love song" for his native city, Los Angeles... you'll certainly hear hear his creative genius and jazz sensitivity on great tunes like the 7:04 "The Architect"... his playing on this one takes me (way back) to the "old L.A.", the one I remember from the early 1960's, when... read more

David Friesen Circle 3 Trio - Where the Light Falls
by Chris Spector, Midwest Record

For my money, Friesen doesn't record enough solo/leader dates so this twofer shows that there isn't too much of a good thing where Friesen recordings are concerned. Culled form several live dates, Friesen's touring trio delivers the goods throughout with some great sitting down jazz listening that never eases up on the pedal. It doesn't have to be groundbreaking when it simply sounds this good. Discerning listeners will easily recognize this... read more

David Friesen and Glen Moore - Bactrian
by Ric Bang, Jazz Scan

This album likely is meant for a limited audience: those who are turned on by the acoustic bass and two of the finest artists who play that instrument, David Friesen and Glen Moore. This is a duet concert by these two masters. Admittedly, both also are pianists, and half of the selections feature one of them on that instrument, with the other on bass, but the rest are bass duets. The genre is modern classical jazz, and just two of the pieces... read more

Shawn Purcell - 180
by Bob Weinberg, Jazziz

Like so many jazz guitarists, Shawn Purcell was awed by the playing of Pat Martino, whose classic album El Hombre truly opened his ears to the possibilities of the guitar-organ trio. And certainly, Martino's influence echoes throughout 180 (Origin), the Washington, D.C.-based Purcell's most recent release. Teaming up with organ virtuoso Pat Bianchi and drum phenom Jason Tiemann, Purcell explores and updates the dynamics of the classic organ... read more

Martin Budde - Back Burner
by Michael van Gee, Jazz'N'More (Switzerland)

4-STARS The debut album by Seattle-based guitarist Martin Budde is a great success. On the one hand, he has internalized the entire history of jazz guitar, but on the other hand, he has also processed his earlier influences from country and folk music. He has integrated his long-time colleagues from the jazz sextet "Meridian Odyssey", bassist Ben Feldman and drummer Xavier Lecouturier, into his trio. With the exception of the Joni... read more

Collier & Dean - Duets
by Dan McClenaghan, All About Jazz

Ringing right in the middle of Duets, the new release by mallet man (vibes and marimba player) Tom Collier and bassist Dan Dean, is the unlikely--for a jazz set--Jagger/Richards tune, "What A Shame." It's an instrumental here, of course, but on the Rolling Stones version, the lyric goes:

What a shame,
nothing seems to be going right...

It's a nice take on the tune, but the sentiment doesn't ring true for Collier and Dean. With this, as... read more

Anthony Branker and Word Play - The Forward (Towards Equality) Suite
by Chris Spector, Midwest Record

This cat has so many facets it's hard to keep them all straight. Here, we find him lining up some killer cats and getting his non-commie Paul Robeson on for some civil rights jazz and poetry for a new era that might finds it's roots in the past but is looking ahead. If you want music with a message, this is the stuff that delivers it in right on... read more

Laurie Antonioli and Richie Beirach - Varuna
by George W. Harris, Jazz Weekly

Intimate interaction takes place between vocalist Laurie Antonioli and pianist Richie Beirach during this (mostly) duet session. Bassist Pepe Berns shows up for a sensitive read of "Gentle Rain" and a three part "Resolution Suite" but for the most part you get voice and ivories searching various dynamics and rhythms. Sometimes Antonioli whispers and speaks low when she speaks love, whle on "Summer Night" the two swing it confidently. A read of... read more
