Joe Locke / Geoffrey Keezer Group - Live In Seattle
by Ric Bang, the Davis Enterprise

*****
This CD presents the 2005 award-winning concert - and U.S. debut - of the Joe Locke and Geoffrey Keezer quartet. Until recently, this group toured only in Japan, although it made two recordings for the Sony "Eightly-Eight" series label.
But even a cursory look at the leaders' backgrounds and experience will reveal that we're dealing with a pair of Wunderkinds.

Locke plays vibes and has long been recognized as the heir apparent... read more

Brittany Anjou - Enamigo Reciprokataj
by Nicola Barin, Tracce di Jazz (Italy)

Brittany Anjou: the virtuoso of the piano A mad and powerful pianist who makes us jump from the chair, that's who Brittany Anjou is. When you think that the trio plan has already been able to say almost everything, the talented Seattle artist surprises us. Her first trio album, Enamiĝo Reciprokataj , was released in February for the Origin Records label , accompanied by Greg Chudzik on double bass and Nicholas Anderson on drums, which... read more

Human Spirit - Dialogue
by Richard Kamins, Step Tempest

Seattle, Washington-based trumpeter/composer/blogger Jason Parker highly recommended that I listen to "Dialogue" (Origin Records), the new CD from the trio of trumpeter Thomas Marriott, Mark Taylor (alto saxophone) and drummer Matt Jorgensen. It's actually the ensemble's 2nd CD which was released in 2010 in Marriott's name as "Human Spirit." That's now the name of the group.

The 8 tracks here were recorded in October of 2011 at... read more

Mark Zaleski - OUR TIME: REIMAGINING DAVE BRUBECK
by Paul Simpson, The Answer Is In The Beat

Boston's Mark Zaleski pays tribute to his biggest influence with a set of Brubeck interpretations. While the compositions are recognizable, he does add new elements to them and avoids being too faithful, because you can just listen to the originals if you want to hear them the way Brubeck arranged them. "Blue Rondo a la Turk" opens the set, and it sounds like he added a shot of caffeine to the song, as it sounds even more tightly wound than the... read more

Rich Thompson - Less Is More
by Jack Goldstein, Blogcritics.org

Less is More, Rich Thompson?s sequel to last year?s trio album Generations, has the drummer following the same general formula in the choice of material, but now working with a larger ensemble. Straightforward modern harmonies, driven by dynamic percussion, applied to a mixed repertoire of jazz classics interspersed with a few original pieces is the recipe. Like they say, if it?s not broken, don?t mess with it.

Thompson, a music educator who... read more

George Colligan - The Endless Mysteries
by Bobby Reed, DownBeat

Pianist and educator George Colligan's profile continues to rise. He may not be as well known in some circles as his outstanding trio partners on this project - bassist Larry Grenadier and Colligan's frequent employer, drummer Jack DeJohnette - but he certainly has the chops to hang with them. The Endless Mysteries, Colligan's 24th album as a leader, contains 10 original compositions, many of which the keyboardist developed while playing with... read more

Kobie Watkins - Involved
by Oscar Groomes, O's Place Jazz.com

Drummer Kobie Watkins leads a band with James Austin (p), Clark Sommers (b) and several talented musicians playing brass. Guitarist Bobby Broom is featured on "Expressions", the best of four Watkins originals. We also enjoyed "Congo" with Pharez Whitted (t) and Ryan Cohen on the keys. Geof Bradfield plays sax on five tracks notably the hot blues of "Third Pew". The pace and mode are varied but Kobie is always Involved with tight beats on drums... read more

Sarah Partridge - I Never Thought I'd Be Here
by George W. Harris, Jazz Weekly

Sarah Partridge does the composing here, yet sounds a bit more in the modern jazz tradition. With the team of Allen Farnham on piano, bassist Bill Moring, Tim Horner on drums, guitarist Paul Meyers, Scott Robinson on woodwinds, and trombonist Ben Williams she is able to display sophistication on mature ballads such as "Eager Is The Night" and " Caverns of My Heart." Her voice is quite flexible, and she shows she can hit the blue notes well on... read more
