Harvie S has long been one of the most sought-after double bassists on the New York jazz scene, ever since he moved there in the early 1970's. Over the course of his career, he has collaborated with a veritable who's who of straight-ahead jazz - Sheila Jordan, Kenny Barron and Alan Broadbent among them - building a rich and distinguished artistic path.

With "Bright Dawn", he confidently reasserts his identity as a bandleader, composer and outstanding instrumentalist. The album is marked by a notable variety of musical settings, all held together by a clear and coherent vision that never feels unfocused. From the very first bars, Harvie S's technical command is evident - he moves effortlessly between fast pizzicato passages and arco playing, while remaining an impeccable accompanist throughout.

The track sequence is thoughtfully conceived and, while rooted in the language of so-called "mainstream jazz", consistently avoids predictability. This is due not only to the leader's writing, but also to the contributions of a first-rate group of sidemen. Matt Wilson, on drums, forms a highly responsive and cohesive rhythm section with Harvie S - his cymbal work stands out for its nuance and clarity, further enhanced by the excellent recording quality, while his use of brushes is equally refined.

The quartet is completed by Miki Hayama and Peter Bernstein. Originally from Kyoto but long active in New York, Hayama combines a solid classical background with a mature and flexible jazz sensibility. Bernstein, one of the most distinctive guitarists of his generation, plays a crucial role in shaping the ensemble's sound, his phrasing relaxed, elegant and consistently measured.

"Bright Dawn" is an album that convinces through its naturalness and solidity - a work that surprises without striving for innovation at all costs, instead reaffirming, with intelligence and taste, the enduring vitality of contemporary jazz.
