Trumpeter Jared Hall's new release, Hometown, is an engaging and assured album that successfully blends the warmth and lyricism of cool jazz without ever feeling complacent. Rooted in reflection but propelled by a modern sensibility, it's a record that values tone, interplay, and a collective spirit that runs through the whole recording.

Hall has spent years building his voice across diverse jazz scenes, from the Midwest to the Pacific Northwest, and that breadth of experience informs the album's unhurried confidence. His trumpet sound is the focal point: rounded, expressive, and probing without becoming overstated. There's an echo here of the cool school lineage of Chet Baker or the clarity of Kenny Dorham, but Hall's phrasing feels contemporary, grounded in narrative rather than nostalgia.

The ensemble is key to the album's success. Saxophonist Troy Roberts brings a muscular yet nuanced tenor voice, providing a subtle contrast to Hall's more burnished tone. Pianist Ben Markley is consistently elegant, favouring harmonic richness over density, while bassist Michael Glynn and drummer Kyle Swan form a rhythm section that is supple, responsive, and deeply musical.

The title track, "Hometown", sets the tone with a lyrical openness that feels both personal and inviting. "Step by Step" and "Echoes and Origins" offer knowing nods to jazz tradition, not through imitation but through structure and phrasing, acknowledging lineage rather than replicating it. The inclusion of Bobby Hutcherson's "Little B's Poem" and Thelonious Monk's "Ask Me Now" is telling. Hall positions himself within a continuum, treating these compositions with respect while allowing the band's collective personality to shine through.

"Family Groove" introduces a slightly more relaxed, almost conversational feel. At the same time, "Room 111" stands out as one of the album's most evocative moments, its wistful, spacious, and quietly haunting nature really hitting the spot. The closing "Hometown (Reprise)" brings things full circle in a very pleasing way.

Production-wise, the album benefits from a clean, natural sound. Recorded at Sage Arts Studio and mixed/mastered by Dave Darlington, the recording captures the ensemble's intimacy without sacrificing detail. The horns are warm and present, the piano resonates clearly, and the rhythm section sits comfortably in the mix. Everything feels balanced and intentional.

Hometown has that homely feel. It's like going back to your roots and realising that identity and connection really do matter. Delivered with poise and sincerity, it's a feel-good album in the most wholesome way.
