Trumpeter, and Spokane, Washington resident Jared Hall is back with Hometown, his third release, which is a nice and swinging affair. Big toned and big breath saxophonist Troy Roberts pairs nicely with the round toned trumpeter. Drummer Kyle Swann brings a relaxed pulse, pianist Ben Markley supports everything with a deep harmonic sense, and bassist Michael Glynn drives the music appropriately. The set stars with a funky "Hometown" which includes a solo from Swan that fits the vibe of the tune perfectly. Roberts' solo provides a nice yin to Hall's yang. "Step By Step" is a harmonic juggernaut that the soloist's slice and dice with ease. Bobby Hutcherson's "Little B's Poem" is a favorite of mine, and I aways enjoy hearing it. Ben Markley steps out on "Echoes and Origins" and Swan's support is picture perfect before his brief solo brings everything to a close. Swan and Glynn give "Family Groove" a nice lope while Hall mixes things up and Roberts calms things down. The snap crackle of "Room 111" is the best track on the record featuring some very spirited interaction between Hall and Swan. Roberts' big sound brings us home before he and Swan play a nice sax and drums duet. A reprise of "Hometown" (the strongest tune and arrangement on the record) drives us towards the conclusion of a delightful and good feeling record.
