The nearly 20-minute title cut begins in relative peace and builds slightly in fire before fading into an almost Mingus-ish bit of mild cacophony. Radding's fading arco then serves as a lead in to the brief landscape of "Aphasia." "Never 3 Sunday" is 13 minutes of introspective work that highlights Carter's warm tone. By the closing "Roadrunner," some of the fire from the opener returns, with the trio working at a slightly less hectic, though equally compelling pace.
This is not music for the weak of heart or ear. This is an aural journey that is both colorful and rough hewn. Beautifully executed and brilliantly played.
