Collier makes vibes and marimbas the expressive and emotional equal of piano keyboards.
For this recording, Tom Collier has arranged works mostly composed for two violins, and has adapted them to marimba and vibraphone. Collier's first encounter with classical music for marimba occurred in the late 1950's when he learned from transcriptions of great violin music, some of the only published music available for mallet instruments at the time. This recording marks Collier's return to his earliest musical roots as a student. Director of Percussion Studies at the University of Washington in Seattle, Collier has appeared with the Seattle Symphony, The Denver Symphony, the Los Angeles Repertoire Orchestra, and with many important jazz and popular artists including Earl "Fatha" Hines, Frank Zappa, Cal Tjader, Peggy Lee, Natalie Cole, Barbra Streisand, The Beach Boys, and many more.
