Brad Goode's command of the trumpet allows for plenty of risk-taking moments, drenched with technical astonishment and raw emotion.
ALL ABOUT JAZZ

With longtime collaborators, keyboardist Jeff Jenkins and Ghanaian drum legend Paa Kow, trumpeter Brad Goode creates an imaginative, hard-grooving soundscape on The Unknown, his 19th solo release. As Goode's collection of originals unfurl, his free-flowing aesthetic creates new areas of intensity and exploration. Paa Kow's fluid ideas and percussive dynamism melds with electric bassist Seth Lewis to provide an active undercurrent for Goode's trumpet to spar with. He balances the set with some unexpected tune choices from the pop music vault, including arrangements on Michel LeGrand's "The Windmills of Your Mind," "Jóia" by Caetano Veloso, and Janis Ian's "At Seventeen."

"Never sacrificing the sparkling sense of wonder that's characterized his sound from the beginning, Goode's music reflects maturity and sureness borne of hard-won experience."

Reviews of The Unknown

All About Jazz (Dan McClenaghan)
4 1/2 - STARS One of the joys attached to reviewing music is the exposure to artists who otherwise might not show up on the radar. For every Pat Metheny there are a hundred highly-creative, lower-profile, hugely-talented guitarists plucking the strings; for every Brad Mehldau plying the trade ten dozen marvelous, relatively unknown pianists show u ...

Jazz Weekly (George W Harris)
Trumpeter Brad Goode brings together Jeff Jenkins/keys, Seth Lewis/eb and Paa Kow/dr for rich and deeply grooved originals, with a few clever covers. Goode's horn glistens with Jenkins on a sensitive read of Janis Ian's "At Seventeen" while a synthy solo sets the mood for Kow to dig in on Caetano Veloso's "Joia". Lewis is a presence throughout, gi ...

CD Hotlist (Rick Anderson)
As regular readers know, my strong preference in jazz is for the straight-ahead and swinging, and I particularly tend not to gravitate towards funk- or progressive jazz. Nothing against those styles, they just don't generally speak to me. But this album by trumpeter and composer Brad Goode really connected for me — in part because his funkiness i ...

Take Effect (Tom Haugen)
The trumpet extraordinaire Brad Goode brings along Jeff Jenkins, Seth Lewis and Paa Kow for this technically proficient and grove filled 19th solo album that's as intense as it is exciting. "Decathexis" starts the listen with no lack of energy, as Lewis' funky bass lines and Kow's acrobatic drumming make for a lively jazz spirit, and "Pain" con ...
