Canadian singer Angela Verbrugge is three deep in a promising discography with Somewhere. This recording follows her well received The Night We Couldn't Say Goodnight (Gut Strings Records, 2019) and Love for Connoisseurs (Gut Strings Records, 2022). Verbrugge's third recording is a more extended play release than a full-fledged album (seven selections in all), but this in no way diminishes its value for enjoyment. The singer prefers the small confines of the jazz trio with supplementation provided by vocalist Erk Kalaidzis on the Berstein and Sondheim classic "Somewhere" from West Side Story (Columbia, 1957) and saxophonist Dave Say on "Somewhere" and Verbrugge's Francophonic "Je Ne Veux Pas Te Dire Bonsoir."

The singer thrives in this environment, which allows her to explore the softer aspects of Warren and Gordon's "I Had The Craziest Dream" and Mel Torme's "Born To Be Blue." Verbrugge excels on the Freddie Green's "Until I Met You (Corner Pocket)" and the Gershwin Brothers "For You, For Me, Forevermore." This is a simple program presented beautifully. Verbrugge is blooming robustly. She now owes us a full release.
