His playing is always beautiful and poetic. Someone once said that great art never looks like great art...this describes Randy's music perfectly.
Jiggs Whigham

Pianist, arranger, composer, and author Randy Halberstadt combines with bassist Jeff Johnson and drummer Gary Hobbs for new takes on a beautiful set of standards (Touch of Your Lips, Moonray, Everything I Love), originals and even Chopin's Nocturne in C# Minor. Reviews of Parallel Tracks

All About Jazz (Dan McClenaghan)
The piano trio format serves me not only as a sort of nourishment, but also as a form of reset device. Every couple of months I push back the larger ensemble discs and and pull out the most vibrant piano trio discs of the past year or so, put them on the stereo and listen to some jazz, straight, no chaser, for pure personal enjoyment, and to recali ...

All Music Guide (Scott Yanow)
The trio of pianist Randy Halberstadt, bassist Jeff Johnson, and drummer Gary Hobbs is based in the Pacific Northwest. On this outing, they perform a few swingers ("The Touch of Your Lips" and "Everything I Love"), engage in superior ballad playing ("In the Wee Small Hours of the Morning" and "Don't Forget the Poet"), and show off their wit on Thel ...

Jazz Scene (George Fendel)
Hey, if you want to talk about Seattle's three or four best piano practitioners, you'd better put Randy Halberstadt on the list. Right around the top. I heard him a few years back here in PDX accompanying singer Meredith d'Ambrosio, and remember being duly impressed. Well, here's Randy with a couple more giants, Jeff Johnson, bass and Gary Hobbs, d ...

Audiophile Audition (John Sunier)
Recorded in Seattle, this album from one of the outstanding jazz pianists of the Pacific Northwest brings us a notable lineup of composers - Artie Shaw, Branislav Kaper, Ray Noble, Bill Evans, Thelonious Monk, Cole Porter, Italian jazzman Enrico Pieranunzi, and would you believe Frederic Chopin? This is a trend seen on a number of jazz releases lat ...
