...a mellifluous musical expedition led by this mature bassist, who crafts his music with utmost confidence and grace... The depth of emotion of his music is truly touching ...
Born in Mérida, Mexico, Gabriel Espinosa discovered music early, beginning guitar lessons at age six with the encouragement of his mother. By fourteen, he was performing professionally on bass guitar with his brothers Victor and Patricio in the family group Los Deltons, laying the foundation for a lifelong career that would bridge jazz, Latin American music, education, and international collaboration.
Espinosa came to the United States in 1976 to attend Central College in Pella, Iowa, earning a BA in Music. He later attended Berklee College of Music, graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1983 with a degree in arranging. During his final year at Berklee, he co-founded the group Ashanti with Swiss saxophonist George Robert, performing extensively throughout Boston before relocating the band to Cancún, Mexico, where they worked steadily from 1984-1991.
In 1992, Espinosa entered the jazz studies program at the University of North Texas, earning a Master's degree in 1995 while performing with the acclaimed UNT Jazz Singers. During this period he also produced recordings for several Mexican artists, including legendary songwriter Armando Manzanero.
Returning to Iowa in 1996, Espinosa joined the faculty of Central College as Director of Jazz Studies, where he led jazz ensembles, taught private lessons, and founded the school's successful Vocal Combos program. In 2004, he became Director of the Latin American Ensemble at Grinnell College. At the same time, he revived Ashanti, which went on to record the albums En Fuego, Sin Fronteras, and Dyos Bo'otik, while touring throughout the Midwest and Mexico with guests including Alex Acuña, Anat Cohen, Gil Goldstein, and Dave Samuels.
Over the following years, Espinosa expanded his profile internationally through performances and recordings that blended jazz, Brazilian music, boleros, and sophisticated vocal arrangements. His acclaimed solo debut From Yucatan to Rio featured collaborations with artists such as Antonio Sánchez, Claudio Roditi, Romero Lubambo, and vocalist Alison Wedding. He later collaborated extensively with harmonica virtuoso Hendrik Meurkens on the celebrated recordings Celebrando and Samba Little Samba, projects praised by publications including JazzTimes and DownBeat and featured at venues ranging from Lincoln Center's Dizzy's Club Coca-Cola to international festivals in Mexico, Italy, and the United States.
Espinosa's later projects continued to highlight his elegant fusion of jazz and Latin traditions. Songs of Bacharach and Manzanero, featuring nine-time Grammy nominee Tierney Sutton, explored the songbooks of Burt Bacharach and Armando Manzanero, while Nostalgias de Mi Vida featured vocalist Kim Nazarian. His 2023 release Bossas & Boleros brought together an international cast including Fred Hersch, The New York Voices, and Anat Cohen, further affirming Espinosa's reputation as a distinctive voice in contemporary Latin jazz.
